NY asylum seekers could be detained indefinitely under new ruling

ALBANY — Asylum seekers held in local immigration detention and those who cross into New York from Canada illegally could be held indefinitely under a new federal ruling.

Attorney General William Barr released a decision Tuesday that says asylum seekers who passed "credible fear" interviews with immigration officers — the first step to prove they have fled persecution in their home countries — after entering the U.S. illegally are ineligible to get bond while their asylum claims are being decided by an immigration judge. The Department of Homeland Security can still decide to grant "parole."
